Time and synchronicity. (Roughsketch)

I developed a series of procedures that would engage certain pre-occupations relating to notions

 of process and duration.

Time and synchronicity

A 'target' consisting of a sheetof A4 paper with a small central cross was attached to a board. Darts without flights (non-functioning?) were thrown until one stuck in the target. At this point the video camera filming the 'event' was stopped. The dart was removed and the process re-started. (This continued until the natural light began to fade.) The footage was processed through Premiere to create a series of still 'frames'.

A series of short quick time movies were created utilising differentframe rates. I experimented by layering one movie with a copy on the top of it running in a reverse direction. By utilising After Effects I was able to crop half of the topmost layer so that the single screen revealed half of the movie running forwards and the other half running backwards.

At a certain point symmetry appears on the screen and this coincides with a temporal overlapping of frames.

In a numerical sense if two people begin counting from one through to five, one starting at one and the other at five counting backwards, if they count at the same speed then they should both say 'three' at the same time.

Visually:-

1 2 3 4 5

5 4 3 2 1

This piece can exist in a number of forms:

1.     As a score consisting of a description of the process, distances, number ofrepetitions, length of time etc;

2.     As a video piece documenting the 'event'.

3.     As a projection using the manipulated movie.

4.     As a 'drawing' the sheet of paper at the end of the event as a repository of traces

         left by the actions.
